Final Project

For our final assigment, we were to create a fibonacci sequence design using any form of our choice and any materials. I was really inspired by the shape of a cicada wing:

I then created an abstracted unit form and used materials such as 1/4" dowels, floss, black Canson paper, plastic cups, wax, cardboard, and masking tape. I did slight variations of the materials on each unit form to create slight contrast and directional movement.

Organic Form

For my 5th assignment, I created a form out of a balloon and cement, pressing the balloon to the corner of a table while it solidified. Then I used a measurement system to create a format of "slices" of the form. The slices were then entered into photoshop and edited slightly, then sent to a laser printer to be cut.

The chip board was then binded together with 1/4" cubes of bass wood dowels, and a wood cube was used as the base. I then cut out specific parts of a few pieces so that it would fit correctly to the cube, incorporating the base into the design. 

I finished the edges with a gradient. 

I feel as though the above picture allows the best view of the form and color.

Cube Structure

For the fourth assignment, we were instructed to create a 6"x6 symmetrical cube with an interior design as well. 

My form began with a diamond-like shape and then I created triangular edges to complete the cube shape. In the interior, I created another smaller cube that encased a cube like structure (a series of squares attached with 45 degree angled bass wood cuts). I then used bristol paper to create closed form on the triangular shapes. 

Materials used were: bass wood dowels, wood glue, bristol paper, miter saw and sandpaper 

My final form ended up being asymmetrical from the sides, due to the diamond shape and triangular forms, which I attempted to fix but realized that the form could not stand on it's own if I did. 

Cell Design, Assignment 2

In this assignment, we took a basic cube pattern and redesigned it to create our own form. We used two pieces of colored canson paper and used spray adhesive to bind them. Then paper cement was used to piece each cell together. Each form took me roughly an hour to place together and I struggled with the material, as it did not want to bend in the way that my design intended and the glue was constantly coming undone.

I then arranged the 16 cells in order to look like a constant fluctuation of the angles. Each cell had a cube-like bottom, with a concave angle and convex, the convex becoming a tower-like structure with an angled top with a cut on top.

Assignment 3

For this assignment. we had to chose an area near our classroom where we could construct a form from the negative space. I chose to model my sculpture from the negative space of the bottom half of a painting easel. It was constructed with cardboard.

Design III, Relief design

For my first design III assignment, we had to chose an interior picture to begin our form with, I chose this photo:

I then placed it into Photoshop and creating shapes throughout the image. This was the result:

With that image, I had to decide on the elevations of each piece and how it would create directional movement and visual interest. This is my final design made out of illustration board and sobo glue:

There is a combination of concave and convex shapes, as well as elevations that I created to add visual interest and movement. I really enjoyed the problem solving aspect of this project and it was a great intro into 3D design. 

Self Portrait

For my final project, I had to create a self portrait using optical mixtures, flat color, and collage. 

The first image is my two keys for my optical mixtures, and the bottom is the final result.
